Recent statistics indicate that more than 50% of elderly and disabled homeowners from Bibb County are “shelter poor” (unable to maintain the homes that they own). While basic costs of living in our area and the costs of home maintenance continue to rise, social security and pension funds do not increase accordingly. To meet their daily needs, our low-income neighbors often defer home repairs – unattended repairs only escalate into bigger problems. More of our local homeowners are living in unsafe surroundings, and others are losing their homes because they cannot afford to maintain them.
Rebuilding Macon’s Emergency Repair Program provides for the repair of urgent health & safety issues in individual homes, such as roof leaks, inoperable heating systems, plumbing leaks, and non-standard electrical systems. For many people, a home is their only asset. Many of these homeowners have lived in Bibb County for over 40 years, and all they want is to continue to live in the homes they love. Unfortunately, their fixed income barely covers living needs much less emergency home repairs. Assistance is provided primarily on a first-come, first-served basis, and services are provided as long as funding is available.
