Rebuilding Macon’s Youth Enrichment Program was created to increase volunteer opportunities to enrich youth /young adults, address community needs and develop a lifetime commitment to service.
Objectives:
- To engage young people in service projects that are challenging, rewarding and educational.
- To serve the unmet needs of the community and its residents.
- To promote among young people a greater understanding & appreciation for the diversity of their community.
- To promote a lifetime ethic of service among young people.
The program has two components:
Summer Sizzle
We began in 2003 with 170 teen and youth volunteers repairing 15 homes to over 1000 teens and young adults each summer, repairing approximately 60 homes and 8 roofs. These young volunteers are mentored by seasoned volunteers such as the Good Samaritans and the Middle Georgia Woodworkers. The older volunteers are eager and willing to share their time and expertise, so that the younger volunteers may gain new skills and knowledge. In support of Rebuilding Macon’s mission to preserve and revitalize houses and communities, assuring that low-income and elderly and disabled homeowners, live in warmth, safety, and independence, these volunteers re-roof houses, repair and install windows, perform basic carpentry and plumbing repairs, apply exterior paint, and build wheel chair ramps.
Spring Fling
We provide an alternative spring break option for youth and young adults to give back to the community by joining our mission to ease the lives of low-income elderly and disabled homeowners.
Our Spring Fling program focuses on giving youth and college students (young adults) an opportunity to give back to the community during their school spring break. Rebuilding Macon and the young people of RM Spring Fling repaired 28 houses during Spring 2008.
